Frequently Asked Questions

Why does twelve months matter so much?

Many jurisdictions tax gains on assets held under a year at full income rates and apply a lower rate beyond that threshold. Crossing it can cut the bill on the same gain by half or more, which is why selling date deserves attention.

Are unrealised gains taxed?

Generally no. Tax is normally triggered when you sell and realise the gain, which is what makes deliberate timing of disposals meaningful.

Can losses reduce the bill?

In most systems realised losses offset realised gains, and unused losses can often be carried forward. Deliberately realising a loss to offset a gain is commonly called tax-loss harvesting, though anti-avoidance rules restrict buying the same asset straight back.

Do the defaults apply to my country?

Treat them as placeholders. Rates, thresholds, allowances and dividend treatment differ sharply between jurisdictions - replace every rate with your own before reading anything into the result.

Worked Examples

The cost of selling too early

A $20,000 gain taxed at a 32% short-term rate costs $6,400. Held past twelve months at 15% it costs $3,000 - the same investment, $3,400 apart, decided purely by the sale date.

Dividends are taxed as you go

Unlike gains, dividends are usually taxed in the year received whether or not you reinvest them, which is why high-yield holdings often sit better inside tax-sheltered accounts.
